Visi-Lab is a minimal patient contact 'appropriate technology' system for sleep screening. Simplicity, economics and ease of use has made Visi-Lab the UK's standard system with more than 140 installations since 1993.

The most important parameters to monitor for the assessment of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome (OSAS) when considering patients for CPAP therapy or surgery, are measures of sleep fragmentation and the increase in upper airway resistance.

The Visi-3 system uses digital audio/video recordings and Masimo oximetry to generate measures of sleep disturbance: body movement and heart rate changes, upper airway resistance: oxygen saturation and snoring/environmental sounds, calibrated in decibels and from the nasal airflow sensor, allowing a comprehensive assessment of sleep disordered breathing and disturbed sleep. Visi-3 uses these signals in conjunction with an ECG (EKG) channel to generate several further measures of sleep disturbance: ECG waveform and R-R interval, Pulse Transit Time and Pulsatile Index. Oral/nasal airflow, body position and movement, the pressure from a standard CPAP machine or mask, two respiratory effort channels and a floating input are also available.

Data is stored and displayed on a PC running Windows and digital audio/video recordings with the traces superimposed are available to backup the signals seen on the computer, providing economic storage and viewing of the subject.
