Stowood and Sleep Recording in the UK

Stowood Scientific Instruments Ltd (Stowood), established in 1992, is a group of bioengineering, hardware and software specialists collaborating in developments for the sleep laboratory. The company is privately owned, independent and technically orientated, with a wealth of experience of hospitals and medical equipment.

The need for change...

Over the past twenty years there has been a definitive change in sleep technology and monitoring. Initially it was thought by many in the UK that it was absolutely necessary to use observed polysomnography including EEG and sleep stage analysis even for the diagnosis of relatively simple sleep problems such as sleep apnoea syndrome. The research of Professors John Stradling in Oxford and Neil Douglas in Edinburgh then proved the utility of using simpler equipment, which in essence meant sleep diagnosis became available to a far greater number of people.

Stowood Scientific Instruments' Role in UK sleep

Our contribution has been at least threefold:

1. By the introduction of the Visi-Lab system to simplify the diagnostic process: which was fundamental in making respiratory polysomnography available to the DGH (district general hospital).

2. Our Download software with its' Konica Minolta equivalent DS-3 (now DS-5)allowed oximetry studies in the patient's home - increasing the possibilities and progress in sleep monitoring. Our software is in use in thousands of hospitals worldwide.

3. We were the partner of choice for Embla when they introduced the first acceptable home sleep screener, the Embletta
